New Features and Improvements - February 2012

New Features and Improvements - February 2012

When we first started Remix Comps back in December 2008, we could only find about 40 remix contests, today as I write this there are 135 remix contests listed on the site. Because of this huge increase in the number of remix contests it can get difficult to quickly go through and find the best of the best. We also realize that not all remix contests are created equally and some don't reward remixers as well as others do.

We wanted to add some updates which make it easier and quicker for visitors as well as making certain remix contests stand out from the crowd when they reward remixers for their hard work with good prizes. We also want to see remix contests start being a bit more open about the amount of royalties that a remixer gets when a remix gets released as many remix contests don't even mention any royalties at all.

When royalty percentage is mentioned we are now highlighting this with a star on the right hand side of the listing. We also have a new section under the prize drop-down at the top which allows you to see just remix contests which say that they are giving away royalties. Plus we have a new way to sort these so you can quickly see the highest royalty percentage paying remix contest on this page, this is available from the new dropdown above called "Top".

Some remix contests give away a cash rewards instead of royalties. So just like with the contests paying royalties we highlight these contests with a star on the right of the listing and we also have another page which sorts these by cash value for the main prize winner on this page and this is also available from the new dropdown.

We also have a new Editor's Picks page where we will be selecting remix contests as they are listed that have a decentgood combination of decent prizes, no "bad" rules and based upon the original track. Editor's Picks are also highlighted on the right hand side of the remix contest.

We hope these improvements help you using the site.

New Cleaner Look Plus New and Removed Features.

New Cleaner Look Plus New and Removed Features.

As you can see Remix Comps has got a new look, it is supposed to be clearer, more readable and less cluttered. The member section has been completely removed because most of it wasn't used regularly. The site has gone back to the bare bones of what the site is suppose to be which is a sortable database of Remix Contests.

Because it took time to send out emails to subscribers the email newsletter wasn't being sent as I couldn't be bothered so this has been replaced with Feedburner so that any new contests get automagically sent to you via email rather than it becoming a chore for me and never getting done. So anyone who was subscribed before need to resubscribe in the box to the left.

You can now sort the contests via our new nifty drop down menu. You can sort by contest genre, prize type, entry fee and selection method. This should make it easier to browse for a specific type of contest rather than going through the whole lot.

Search has been updated and now includes all the information in the actual listing rather than just the title. This should make it easier to find a specific contest quickly.

Our comments have been moved over to Disqus style comments which means they can be made using your Facebook or Twitter account. This should hopefully mean more people start commenting rather than the old system of having to register for the old members area of Remix Comps.

Hopefully these changes should make Remix Comps more pleasant to browse and interact with. It is also designed to make it easier for me to update and keep up to date too, so hopefully all these new changes will work out good and keep Remix Comps running better into the future.

The Rise of the Remix Contest

The Rise of the Remix Contest

Our site Remix Comps is coming up to 1 year old in November. Everyday I have done a check to see what new remix contests have been announced and list all found new contest on that same day. Therefore I have been following remix contests more closely than most people and thought I would share with you all what I have seen over the past year.

Our site lists nearly every remix contest which has a half decent prize and which isn't an obvious scam. Therefore I have been able to track the number of remix contests that have started each month and today I am giving you those stats to see for yourselves.

Below are the number of contests that we have listed every month since January. (January was the first month where I was checking everyday).

  • January 2009 (18)
  • February 2009 (25)
  • March 2009 (34)
  • April 2009 (39)
  • May 2009 (47)
  • June 2009 (43)
  • July 2009 (48)
  • August 2009 (68)
  • September 2009 (78)
  • October 2009 (76)

As you can see there has been a staggering growth of remix contests over the past year in the range of about 3 times the amount starting each month.

The main page of Remix Comps (Latest) lists the new contests and they automatically disappear once they close, therefore keeping a record of how many contests are running at any one time. At the moment as I write this there are 110 remix contests currently accepting entries. In February/March time I can remember that there was only about 35 to 40 running. Again a large growth in remix contests.

I'm not sure but I'm guessing that there must also be a growth of in the number of remixers out there too. Every month on RemixComps the number of visitors has grown compared to the previous month. It is hard to estimate how much the growth is down to the site being known about more compared to a rise in the number of people entering remix contests. I can tell you thought that during September 2009 our site had 28,000 unique I.P addresses visit us and 57,000 pageviews. So there is definitely a lot of remixers out there.

As you can see there has been a dramatic rise in remix contests and hopefully remix contests will continue to grow with better and better prizes and chances for unknown music producers to get noticed. I just thought I would share this info with you all.

Our new blog ProducingBeats.com

Our new blog ProducingBeats.com

After running Remix Comps for 10 months now (Time does goes fast) and getting the hang of posting the new contests almost daily and also making this site pretty successful, we have decided to start to run a new project alongside Remix Comps. Our new project is in the form of a blog and is called Producing Beats.

This blog will also be posted to daily and will hopefully be liked by the same visitors who like this site. We plan on posting music tutorials, free samplepacks, tips and tricks, videos, music, interviews, news and anything else that just seems blog post worthy. We hope that you will come and check us out over there, bookmark the site, subscribe to the RSS feed, via email or follow us on @producingbeats.

Don't worry this will not affect the posting frequency of new contests on Remix Comps :)

Our First Post on our New Blog

Our First Post on our New Blog

Remix Comps was launched today 30th November 2008 and we are starting to list as many remix competitions as we can find. We want to make this the best resource for competitions and contest on the net that are of interest to musicians.

If you are running or you know of a remix comp that we don't have listed please tell us about it by going to our submit page.

We want to improve the way remix competitions are submitted but at this point in time we just want the URL of the page the competition is listed on.

Anyway we hope you find this resource useful and come back regularly to see the latest remix competitions that we find on the internet. You never know you may even win one that you find through our site.
